COFFEE SOURCING IN GUATEMALA AND COSTA RICA.

“HAVE YOU BEEN TO ORIGIN?”

THIS IS A QUESTION OFTEN ASKED IN THE COFFEE INDUSTRY. THE TERM “ORGIN REFERS TO ANY COUNTRY WHERE COFFEE IS GROWN AND PROCESSED. IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO CREATE PARTNERSHIPS WITH VARIOUS IMPORTERS AND COFFEE BUYERS, WHICH HAS GIVEN US ACCESS TO A WIDE VARIETY OF HIGH QUALITY COFFEES. WE ARE EXTREMELY THANKFUL FOR THESE RELATIONSHIPS, AS THEY HAVE GUIDED OUR COFFEE SOURCING DECISIONS. HOWEVER, THIS LAST FEBUARY, WE WERE ABLE TO TRAVEL TO ORGIN AND EXPERIENCE THESE FARMS FIRST HAND. WE NOW KNOW THAT THERE ISN’T A SUNSTITUTE FOR TOURING A FARM WITH THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR GROWING THE PRODUCT THAT THEIR FAMILY DEPENDS UPON. IN ADDITION TO GAINING FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE OF WHAT TAKES PLACE AT THE FARM LEVEL, IT ALSO GIVES US ACCESS TO THEIR TOP QUALITY COFFEES AND AN INCREDIBLE INSIGHT TO THEIR LIVES AND COMMUNITIES.

“THESE COFFEES DON’T MAKE IT TO THE OPEN MARKET”

EARLY THIS YEAR, WE SPENT SEVERAL DAYS EXPERIENCING THE HOSPITALITY, COFFEE AND CULTURE OF COSTA RICA AND GUATEMALA. IN COSTA RICA, WE VISITED LAS LAJAS, WHOSE WORLD RENOWNED HONEY PROCESSED COFFEES HAVE BEEN IN OUR LINE UP FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS. AN AFTERNOON OF TOURING THE FARM WITH THE CHACON FAMILY WAS CAPPED BY A CUPPING OF THIS YEARS CROP. AS THE SUN SET OVER THE CENTRAL VALLEY, WE FOUND ONE COFFEE THAT STOOD OUT ABOVE THE REST, AND WE ARE EXCITED TO BRING IT BACK TO SHARE WITH OUR COMMUNITY. FURTHER CUPPING WAS DONE IN THE TARRAZU REGION, WHERE WE FOUND THREE MORE DELICIOUS COFFEES TO BRING HOME BEFORE BOARDING A PLANE TO OUR NEXT DESTINATION…

GUATEMALA.

GUATEMALA WAS A WHIRLWIND OF NUMEROUS CUPPINGS AND FARM TOURS. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE TRIP WAS OUR DAY AT FINCA DE DIOS, IN THE FRAIJANES REGION.

FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, WE HAVE PURCHASED COFFEE FROM THIS FARM BECAUSE OF ITS INCREDIBLE QUALITY AND CONSISTENCY. THE QUALITY OF THEIR COFFEE IS ONLY SURPASSED BY THE HOSPITALITY AND FRIENDLINESS OF THE PRENTICE FAMILY, WHO RUN THE FARM.

WHILE WALKING AMONGST THE TREES THAT PROVIDED US COFFEE OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS, WE TRULY COMPLETED THE SENSE OF CONNECTION THAT “DIRECT TRADE” IS ALL ABOUT. WHAT STARTED WITH A SMALL 200 GRAM GREEN COFFEE SAMPLE HAS GROWN INTO A RELATIONSHIP THAT WE HOPE WILL CONTINUE FOR YEARS TO COME. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR ELLEN, STUART, AND ASHLEY PRENTICE, AND THEIR HARD WORK IN KEEPING US CAFFEINATED.

ALONG WITH THE COFFEES FROM FINCA DE DIOS, WE FOUND SEVERAL OTHER COFFEES IN GUATEMALA TO FILL OUR BAGS AND HOPPERS, AND WE CAN’T WAIT TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU. THIS EYE OPENING AND EDUCATIONAL TRIP WAS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO HIGHER QUALITY COFFEE FOR OUR COMMUNITY. AS LOFTY GROWS WE LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING OUR COFFEE SOURCING TRIPS AT AMAZING FARMS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD AND BRINGING THEIR STORY AND DELICIOUS COFFEE TO OUR COMMUNITY.
